Inside Athletics was originally founded in September 2007 as an e-magazine by David Byrne. The publication was licensed by Athletics NSW as their official magazine, with former middle-distance training partners David and Tim (then ANSW Administration & Communication Manager) acting as Publisher and Editor respectively.
Inside Athletics established its own independent website in January 2009, aggregating Australian athletics content and creating its own event and editorial coverage, while continuing to produce an e-magazine. The 14th and final edition of the magazine, in March 2011, was produced in hard copy as the program for the 2011 Sydney Track Classic.
The website and accompanying social media presence gained a prominent following within the Australian athletics community, with the website selected for archiving by the National Library of Australia. It was regularly updated until June 2014 before changing to its present format.
