Gregson, Birmingham in personal best form at Prefontaine Classic

Ryan Gregson has set a new NSW record and rocketed to fifth on the Australian all-time list in winning the international mile at the Prefontaine Classic, whilst Collis Birmingham has slashed four seconds from his 5000m personal best.

Gregson recorded a time of 3:53:19 to take close to two seconds off the NSW record set by fellow Commonwealth Games miler Jeremy Roff last year. In lowering his personal best from 3:58.90 Gregson moved passed dozens of athletes on the Australian all-time list, including 1960 Olympic 1500m champion Herb Elliott and 2006 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Mark Fountain.

The international mile was essentially the B-race at the meet, with the flagship Bowerman Mile taken out by Olympic 1500m champion Asbel Kiprop in 3:49.75. To hear Gregson's thoughts after the race watch the following video courtesy of RunnerSpace.

Birmingham finished ninth in the 5000m in 13:10.97 behind Tariku Bekele (12:58.93), the younger brother of world record holder Kenenisa. The run improved his previous personal best of 13:14.53 set one year ago to the day in Oslo and saw him finish less than three seconds behind American Chris Solinksy, who last month had a break through performance over 10000m where he broke 27 minutes for the first time.

In other results, world indoor long jump champion Fabrice Lapierre finished fifth in a competitive men’s long jump with a leap of 8.17m (+0.8 m/s). Reigning Olympic and 2007 world champion Irving Saladino took victory with a leap of 8.46m (+3.2 m/s).
