Brendan Cole and Lauren Boden have taken advantage of pristine Perth conditions to record season bests on the opening day of the WA championships.

Cole stopped the clock at 50.17 seconds in winning his event ahead of Felipe De Castro Cruz (52.59), while Boden was unheeded in her winning time of 56.38 seconds.

National champion Aaron Rouge-Serret won the men's 100m in a wind-assisted 10.33 seconds (+2.4 m/s).
At the NSW championships four Victorians are through to the field of nine for the men's 800m, with Edward Vining the fastest qualifier. The favourite to take out the NSW title is Matt Hammond, with James Gurr bypassing the event to contest the 400m, for which he was the third fastest qualifier for tonight's final (47.57s). Commonwealth Games relay champion Kevin Moore was the fastest qualifier in 47.27 seconds.
Making her season debut in the women's event was Pirrenee Steinert, who qualified fastest in 54.57 seconds. Other heat winners were Steinert's twin sister Sheena (56.41s) and Ireland's Michelle Carey (54.66s).
