Bittersweet salute to Olympic Park

Melbourne's Olympic Park was bade a bittersweet adieu yesterday with Sally Pearson claiming a historic treble, long jumper Mitchell Watt launching himself to the longest leap in the world this year, and 17-year-old Steve Solomon upstaging more credentialled rivals in the men's 400 metres.

Spectators in a disappointingly thin crowd ran a farewell lap of the track after Tamsyn Lewis had won the venue's last race, adding the women's 400 national title to the 800 she took home on Saturday night.

That made 17 national titles in all for the veteran runner, who warned that she still had personal-best times in her in her quest to run at next year's London Olympics.

Lewis said she was upset that track and field was leaving Olympic Park.
