An open field and some big name athletes will make it tough for punters to pick a winner in the Australia Post Stawell Gift this weekend.

Chances come from all over the board amid the 156 starters in the Gift.

"It's a very open Gift, there are some excellent chances coming off the front but also in the middle and some big names at the back," Stawell bookie Les Montgomery said.

"Handicappers have done a great job."
