Wruck top Australian at NCAA championships

Commonwealth Games representative Julian Wruck has had the leading performance of Australian collegiate athletes competing at the NCAA championships, winning the discus.

Wruck, competing for Texas Tech, opened the competition with a throw of 60.08m before sending his second throw sailing to 61.81m, which was ultimately enough to secure victory.

“I went in there and did exactly what I wanted to do,” Wruck said after the event.

“The first throw was nice and easy ,trying to stay in the ring and getting a legal throw. The second throw, I let it rip, and it was really good.”

Australia's best performed athlete on the track was Matt Gibney. Competing for Villanova in the 1500m Gibney took the early lead in what turned into a slow, tactical race. After sitting mid field through the middle section of the race the 22-year-old athlete positioned himself in fourth place at the bell and despite a 54.75 second final lap was unable to improve his placing, stopping the clock in 3:44.38 behind Oregon’s Matt Centrowitz winning time of 3:42.54.

Earlier in the meet at the heat stage, Australian indoor 800m record holder Ryan Foster was disqualified for causing a fall on the final lap.

Genevieve LaCaze, representing the University of Florida, recorded personal bests in the heats and final of the women’s 3000m steeplechase on her way to a fifth place finish. Entering the meet with a personal best of 10:05.51, LaCaze improved to 10:04.68 in the heats before breaking ten minutes for the first time with a 9:59.44 run in the final.
