Watt claims Diamond League title in anti-climax

World championship silver medallist Mitchell Watt has secured the Diamond League title in the long jump jump despite finishing last at the Weltklasse meet in Zurich, Switzerland.

Watt had an unbeatable lead in the race for the US$40,000 series prize in the event, as long as he made a bona fide effort in Brussels. With his world championships performance hampered by injury and obviously still affecting his capabilities, Watt could only manage a best of 6.97m in his two jumps in the competition, but it was nonetheless good enough to tick the box required by the IAAF.

The lacklustre competition was taken out by Zimbabwe’s Ngonidzashe Makusha, who jumped 8.00m in still conditions.

Watt was happy with bringing to a close a long season which saw him set a new Australian record.

“I felt pretty horrible out there today. I knew going into today I had already won the Diamond League but I wanted to jump better than that though,” he said.

“I looked into my diary today and it’s my 16th competition this year so it's been a long season but a good one. I won the Diamond League and have a world silver medal.

“The highlight of the season was probably Stockholm. Everyone had been talking about possibly jumping 8.50m since theworld championships in 2009 so that was really good to do that.”
You want unassisted speed and power in your sport? Look no further than Mitch "Mega" Watt, who combines both qualities so well that he virtually flies.
Long jump champion Mitchell Watt is unlikely to compete in Sydney at the Track Classic this weekend because of a heavy, Olympics-focused training workload that has left him not yet ready to compete.
If winning an Olympic Games gold medal is at least partly a battle between the ears then Mitchell Watt is ready for a scrap.
Fears hat long jumper Mitchell Watt would miss the Australian domestic athletics season have eased after a solution was found to his troublesome calf injury.
