Kathryn Mitchell has put her hand up as a genuine contender for Olympic selection after an enormous javelin throw at a Ballarat Athletics Centre inter-club meet on Saturday.

The Eureka Athletics Club athlete threw 62.51 metres, an A-qualifying distance that also smashed the previous Victorian record.

It is not yet known if the throw will officially count towards Olympic selection as it was part of an inter-club meet, held at Llanberis, but Mitchell says she is confident of making the national squad regardless.
